Use Youtube to create your own sounds
« Thread started on: Mar 27th, 2010, 12:35pm »

Download the latest version here to get started: http://youtubedownload.altervista.org/

YouTube goes through changes all the time, so the YouTube Downloader program is always coming out with a new version. After a few months you may find that your YouTube Downloader doesnt work. Thats when you need to download the latest version

You can use this program called Youtube Downloader to download any video off of Youtube and save it in the MPEG format for use in this game.

To start, open up the program and enter in the URL of the video you want to download. Press ok to start the download and it will save it to your computer in its own special format. From there you can select the "Convert video (previously downloaded) from file" option to convert your previously downloaded file to any of several formats. This game uses MPEG-3 layer audio files for the music. But the MPEG format can easily be converted to WAV for car sounds. Select the MPEG format, choose what quality the video should be in. Don't use the cut tool, it doesnt seem to work. Then just convert the file and it is ready to be used in the game as track music.
To convert MPEG for use as engine sounds it must be converted to the WAV format. Download this program and convert your file: http://www.imtoo.com/mov-converter.html. I already had this program on my computer for converting digital camera video to a format that could be uploaded to youtube. It works great.

The ImTOO MOV convertor (used for converting MPEG to WAV) shown above is over 15 MB, so if you do not wish to download this conversion program there are many others available, such as this one: http://www.regnow.com/softsell/visitor.cgi?affiliate=19393&action=site&vendor=11146&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.008soft.com%2Fmpegtowav.exe. this program is only 417k, so its very small and takes up less space then some game cars. but it is limited to MPEG to WAV conversions only, and the file you are converting cannot exceed 1 minute, where as the free version of ImToo will allow you up to 5 minutes.

The MPEG to WAV convertor allow you to easily keep segments of a video. Just play your sound clip and pause it where you want the sound to start. Press the start time button. Play again until you find your ending time. Press pause and press the end time button. Convert the segment and you have a sound file ready for the game!

The "cut" tool that comes with "Youtube Downloader" seems to create errors.

There are days when my brain doesn't work. This appears to be one of them....

I have yet to sort this out.

I may re-write this better some time

I found myself using IMToo AND MPEG to WAV convertor to edit sound files.

You are limited to what you can do with IMToo and MPEG to WAV is difficult to work with, and sometimes creates files that sound mute in the game.

I found a free program that takes the place of BOTH of these programs and does both of their jobs so much better. Its called WavePad Editor by NCH Software http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/index.html

You're given editing tools on top of it all. The ability to amplify sound, cut, paste, fade, ect. And you have the capability to edit sound within 1 thousandth of a second (0.001).

Basics on how to make your own sound files using youtube:

1.Find a video on youtube (Music, starting sounds, ect) and download it using Youtube downloader. wait a few minutes

2.Using Youtube downloader, now convert this file to a common and usable sound file, such as MP3. wait a few minutes

3.Open WavePad Editor and use the cut tools and other editing tools to trim the video down to the sound bit you need

4.Save as a .WAV file for use as sound effects. Or Save as an .MP3 file for use as game music.
